M.A.G.I.C BOOK

M.A.G.I.C. BOOK
(managing assignments, goals, independence, and communication)

The M.A.G.I.C. Book is a three-ring binder that your first grader will use everyday to develop organizational skills and learn responsibility.  First grade is a foundational year, and it is important to teach children how to keep up with homework, tests, and important notes.  This book is a way of maintaining effective communication between home and school.  It aims to eliminate lost notes, newsletters, notices, calendars, and homework as well as keep parents and students informed of important events and academic progress.  So, if you “wand” to “ear” what’s happening in Mrs. Moroso’s first grade class, check out your child's M.A.G.I.C. Book daily!

Here's what you will find inside:

“Ears” to Good Behavior”:
This sleeve protector contains information about our classroom behavior and behavior codes. The behavior chart and codes can also be viewed here

Daily Calendar:
This pocket will contain your child’s calendar to record daily school behavior, nightly  reading, and nightly math practice. Please leave the calendar in this pocket and record your child’s night reading and math practice.   Remember to sign the calendar at the end of each month and initial if your child needs to be assessed in sight words and/or math facts.  Return to school by the date indicated on the calendar.

School Notes:
This pocket will be used to send home important information from the office, as well as newsletters, notices, and notes from the teacher.  Please check this pocket daily and return anything that needs to be returned. Each morning, your child will be responsible for taking out his/her MAGIC book and checking this pocket. Remember to let your child know daily if there is anything that needs to be turned into the teacher.  This pocket must be checked on a daily basis.

Homework:
Homework is a time for your child to shine and show you what he or she is learning in school. In first grade, the purpose of homework is to help your child develop organizational skills, learn responsibility, and reinforce skills introduced in school.  It is also a time to involve the parent in the academic progress.  Each Monday your child will receive a weekly homework assignment that will be placed in this section. Completed homework must be returned to school in the same pocket.  Please check this section daily.

Wand”erful Work:
This pocket contains schoolwork that may be kept and admired at home.  Please remove it nightly and discuss it with your child. After you have "oooed and ahhhed" over it, we’re  sure you'll want to show off this work on the refrigerator. ENJOY!!! Please check this section daily and remove all items from the pocket.

Homework Helpers:
This section will contain materials that are helpful tools to support your child’s education. This section will contain an alphabet chart, sight words, word wall, ten frames, 120 chart, word chants, classroom rubric, writing rubric and other important first grade tools.  Your child is expected to know everything that is in this section. Please do not remove these materials from the from the M.A.G.I.C. book. Practicing these activities at home will help your child become more successful in the classroom.

Specialist Schedule/School Calendar :
This sleeve will let you know about school holidays, vacations, and what specialist your child has each day.  Be sure your child wears sneakers on Phys. Ed. days.
