READING

Reading
Daily reading at home is an important part of your child's first grade reading program.  Research indicates that children who read 20 minutes each day are more successful in school.  Every minute your child spends with a book, brings him or her closer to becoming a fluent reader.  Even children who have not yet begun to read can gain reading skills simply by sitting down in a quiet location, and looking through a book, or by having an adult read to or along with him or her.
It will be your child's responsibility to read 15 - 20 minutes every evening. Depending on your child’s reading ability they may be read to, read with, or they may read independently.  The book they read may be a book from home, one we read together in class, or one your child has selected from our school library. In order to fulfill the 15 - 20 minutes each night, your child may read one book 3-4 times in an evening. This will enable your child to develop reading fluency.
When reading to or with your child it is important to discuss the book. Ask questions about the characters, the setting, the problem, the solution, ask them to make predictions while reading.  Comprehension is a very important part of reading as well as vocabulary and fluency. Our main goal will be for your child to enjoy reading and to choose to read for pleasure.
